How to design an effective Homepage

The homepage of your site is the business card of your entire online presence; its main objective is to give an overview that describes the entire website and arouses the visitors’ interest.

The homepage design must answer simple questions about the purpose of your entire website such as: "What is the website about?", "What can I do on it?", "What do I find on it?" or "Why should I stay on this website rather than another?". To design an effective homepage, it is crucial to clearly convey the main message, create alluring content and reduce ambiguities.

It’s 2020, so make sure your website - especially the homepage – is responsive, mobile-friendly and quick: people won’t wait for your site to load, they will simply leave.

Let’s now examine the elements a homepage should always have for it to be truly effective and, consequently, decrease the bounce rate. We also added some examples of homepages done right, get inspired by their great design.

Unique Value Proposition - UVP

On your homepage, there must always be a sentence or a short message that explains what the objectives of your business are, the services or products you offer, and how these meet your users’ needs. In this way, visitors will be immediately engaged by the message you want to convey.

Fitness Blender clearly states what they offer to their clients and what makes them stand out from the competition: their completely free workout videos.

Menu Bar

Your homepage is the starting point for browsing the website. The menu must, therefore, be clearly visible, simple and intuitive. Make sure that there are links to all the "key" sections of your site - only the essential ones - and that they properly work. Don’t forget the Call-to-Action button, try to design it with a stand-out color.

Visual elements

To attract the attention of your visitors, use images, videos or illustrations that describe your products and the service you offer. The content should be evocative and inspire users to learn more about you and stick to your site.

Target-centered Design

The Homepage must be designed with the website’s target audience in mind. The tone of voice, the colors, the design, and the shapes must be coherent and reflect the style and tastes of the people you want to reach. Make them feel at home.

In the Fronks’ Homepage, the tone of voice is informal and easy-going. They know how to appeal to their young and trendy audience.

Social proof

Whether it's a review or comment, social proof increases conversions because it generates trust. As we already stated in this article about landing pages, reviews and testimonials from your happy clients are a great way to persuade new visitors to try your service.

Telerik has both qualitative and quantitative data to support their brand: you can see their impressive numbers, as well as read some quotes of satisfied real-life customers.

Contacts info

All websites should have contact information and social media links on the homepage. This gives credibility to your online presence and helps the sales process. If your users need information, they can contact you in a very straight-forward way.

Conclusion

As we have seen, creating an effective homepage can make the difference between keeping the visitors glued to your site or having them leave. You have little space and a few seconds to convince them that your site deserves their time. When creating a homepage, every element should be designed to capture the users' attention and push them to take action.
