The Effects of the Google 2020 Core Update

Just one month ago, Google released its first broad core algorithm update of 2020--and it shook the online world to its very core.

Every single day, Google adds one update or a few changes to its base. These small changes are designed to improve search results and give consumers more targeted, accurate results when they are browsing the web. These changes are usually very small and for the most part, go unnoticed by consumers and hosts.

But, several times throughout the year, Google releases significant updates to their systems and algorithms. These updates--referred to as “core updates”--are carried out to ensure that Google is providing relevant, trustworthy, and reliable information to web searchers.

Each time a core update is carried out, Google reconsiders websites’ Search Engine Results Pages (SERP) rankings based on the sites’ expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness. Core updates can impact the search visibility of websites.

These updates are oftentimes far more noticeable and can cause drops and gains in site visits as well as significant SERP fluctuations--which causes a bit of panic among website owners.

During the first few days after the update was rolled out, many SERP trackers such as SEMRush, Moz, and Rank Ranger began reporting major fluctuations--which indicated that, due to this update, many websites were seeing increases or decreases in their organic ranking positions.

This specific 2020 update focused on improving Google’s ability to assess website content broadly, striving to highlight the most reliable and relevant websites possible.

According to Google, these changes may cause some websites that were previously lower-ranked or overlooked to do better in terms of SERP ratings.

Global SERP Results Affected by the Update

This chart shows the volatility of search rankings one month before the major update. In this case, volatility refers to the liability for website rankings to change rapidly and unpredictably. So, according to SEMrush, volatility was fairly low, meaning websites were experiencing consistent rankings on Google.

Then, come January 14, volatility spiked, which indicated that the implementation of the new Google Core Update drastically changed the rankings of many websites.

What Should I Do if My Website Was Negatively Affected?

The fact that these updates can cause changes (good or bad) to a website’s rank causes a certain amount of anxiety among website owners. Many businesses that have experienced drops in their rankings are looking for a fix but can be tempted to fix the wrong things as they try to regain their footing high on the search list.

Google has recognized these concerns and has stated that websites that have performed less well after the core update are not doing anything wrong, necessarily. They are not violating any of the “webmaster guidelines,” so they do not require algorithmic action. Instead, since the core update centres around improving the way that Google’s systems analyze content overall, Google is urging website owners to focus on the quality of their content in order to revive their SERP rankings.

Read Google’s full list of detailed questions to ask yourself in order to improve the quality of your content, which will potentially increase your SERP ratings.

How Long Will it Take for my Website to Recover?

Those who have experienced negative drops in their SERP ratings are now asking Google how long it will take to raise their spot on the search pages again. The answer to that question lies in your ability to improve the content of your website.

Since broad core updates occur every few months, if your website focused heavily on creating quality content and improving your previous content, your website might regain its footing on search pages once the next round of broad core updates it rolled out.

However, site owners need to keep in mind that there is no way to guarantee website recovery, and, if Google detects other sites that have more reliable content, they will rank those websites higher.

Conclusion

Google core algorithm updates can seem daunting and can cause a lot of anxiety among website owners and operators. But, if you keep an eye on their developments and constantly stay vigilant on their requirements to exemplary, reliable content, you can ensure high search rankings and quality website traffic.
