What should you know to run an E-commerce?

If you are considering opening an online store for your business, you should know that the management costs may vary quite dramatically depending upon how simple or complex the e-commerce platform is and what the licensing costs might be. For a simple yet efficient e-commerce, we suggest to use WordPress and its extension WooCommerce, this software can be customized and adapted to your needs. When it comes to e-commerce websites, there are some options involved that need to be considered carefully.

Web Hosting

The web hosting solutions are usually cheap at the start than become pricier as your sales and needs grow. Before choosing a host for your e-commerce, you should ask yourself these questions:

- Are traffic, products and orders limited?
- How is the quality of customer service?
- Scaling is an available option?
- Is the security level adequate?

Manage a successful store

When it comes to managing an online store, you need to consider some crucial functionalities, such as shipping and payment gateways. These elements involve their own costs.

Shipping

The basic version of WooCommerce is suitable for small businesses because it provides options for flat rate shipping, free shipping or local pickup; these kinds of small companies usually don’t need more functionalities.

If your business requires additional shipping options, the WooCommerce shipping extension connects to the USPS and let you print shipping labels from your WordPress dashboard. By adopting this last alternative, you can save time and money.

Finally, if you need more complex options, choose other shipping extensions like Table Rate Shipping, ShipStation Integration, and Distance Rate Shipping. See a full list of available shipping extensions.

Payments

In every online transaction, the most important step is probably the payment. There are different payment gateways which allow you to safely and securely receive money online. They have various costs and structures, but WooCommerce integrates the main options.

Paypal is certainly one of the most affordable choices: if you create a basic Paypal account you will have to pay 2.9% + 0.30 cents per sale to them, but you won’t have have to pay a monthly fee. Your clients will be directed to the Paypal website, where they will be able to pay with their own account or their credit card.

If you prefer to have your customers pay directly on your website, you can subscribe to Paypal Pro, or choose a different option like Stripe or Authorize.net.

Delight your customers with a great experience

Once you have defined the basic elements of your e-commerce like shipping and payments, you should focus your efforts on creating a delightful experience for your clients: in fact, many studies have shown that good customer experience is essential to increase conversions.

With WooCommerce, you have access to both paid and free extensions to achieve this goal:

Offer product page features. Add features like gift-wrapping or create a waitlist.

Improve the checkout page. Include last-minute upsells, edit checkout fields, or give the option to log in with social media.

Customize your store. Showcase products with videos, add slideshows or use eye-catching pop-ups.

Enhance navigation and search. Include advanced search options or assign brands to your products.

Advertise your products. Make the most of social media, connect your company page or set up ads.

So, what steps should you take when you decide to start an e-commerce website?

When starting an e-commerce, we always suggest consulting a professional company that will help you find the best solutions for your needs and budget. We’ve created a list of milestones that will give you an idea of the main steps you’ll need to take to develop, design and maintain a successful e-commerce:

- Domain and Hosting (monthly Payment)
- Custom Design (One-Off Payment)
- Custom Development (One-Off Payment)
- Setup/Configuration (One-Off Payment)
- Training (One-Off Payment)
- Maintenance (monthly Payment)
- Advertising (monthly Payment)

Now, an online store isn’t just a once-off purchase, it’s a long-term investment, which is why the price will always vary depending on what you want to get out of it.

The price of an online shop will change depending on what your requirements are, how high your standards are and what features you want on your site. If you’re looking at a high-quality, conversion-focused online shop then it’s going to cost more than something made by a friend of a friend who once did a class on HTML basics. Quote to expect: from €4,000 to up to €35,000 and even more, your project may cost less or may cost more than this, it all depends on the functionality requirements and scope of your online store.
